Where Bengal’s community puja began.
About Guptipara
A quiet village-town with a walled group of four old Vaishnav temples, the Brindaban Chandra Math, some with terracotta and painted interiors. Guptipara is remembered as the place where, in about 1790, twelve friends collected subscriptions to hold a puja of their own: the first barowari, the ancestor of every community Durga Puja. Its Rath Yatra is one of the oldest in Bengal.
