Shantiniketan

Shantiniketan grew around the ashram founded by Debendranath Tagore and the school and university (Visva-Bharati) built by Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European Nobel laureate in Literature (1913). The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2023) and is known for open-air classes, art, music, Baul singers, handicrafts and festivals like Poush Mela and Basanta Utsav.
