Gandhi Bhawan (Hyderi Manzil)

গান্ধী ভবন

The house where Gandhi fasted to stop the riots of 1947.

About Gandhi Bhawan (Hyderi Manzil)

In August 1947, as the country was partitioned, Mahatma Gandhi came to Calcutta and moved into Hyderi Manzil, a run-down house in riot-torn Beliaghata, with the Muslim League leader H.S. Suhrawardy. He spent 15 August here, fasting and praying, and when violence returned in September he fasted until the city’s leaders laid down their weapons at his feet. Mountbatten called him a one-man boundary force. The house is kept as a memorial with photographs and the objects he used.
