The memorial at Budge Budge to the passengers shot in 1914.

About Komagata Maru Memorial

In 1914 the ship Komagata Maru carried 376 Indian passengers, most of them Sikhs from Punjab, to Vancouver, where Canada refused to let them land. Forced back across the Pacific, the ship was brought to Budge Budge. When the passengers refused to board a train to Punjab, police opened fire and about twenty were killed. A memorial was raised here in 1952, and the railway station was later renamed in the ship’s honour.
