Rabindra Sarobar

রবীন্দ্র সরোবর

Also known as Dhakuria Lake, "the Lake".

A 73-acre lake ringed by trees: South Kolkata’s morning walk.

About Rabindra Sarobar

The lake was dug in the 1920s when the Calcutta Improvement Trust developed the area, and was renamed after Tagore in 1958. Around the water are old rain trees, rowing clubs dating from the colonial years, an open-air theatre, a stadium, a mosque on an island reached by a hanging bridge, and a Japanese Buddhist temple. Birdwatchers have recorded well over a hundred species here.
