A riverside memorial town
Often described as the oldest cantonment in India, and the place where the sepoy Mangal Pandey rose against his officers in 1857. The cantonment and the police academy grounds are closed to visitors, but the public riverfront has Gandhi Ghat, a memorial garden and a museum on Gandhi.
Did you know
- The first barracks were built here in 1772, which gave the town its name.
- Part of Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in the Hooghly here in 1948.
