About South Park Street Cemetery
One of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world, used from 1767 to the 1830s. Under tall old trees stand hundreds of tombs in the shapes the Georgians favoured: pyramids, obelisks, domed pavilions. Sir William Jones, founder of the Asiatic Society, is buried here; so are Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, the young teacher who inspired the Young Bengal movement, and Rose Aylmer of Landor’s poem. It is a protected heritage site looked after by a Christian burial board.
