A Dutch ghat and the first monastery
The Dutch had a trading station at Baranagar in the seventeenth century, and Kuthi Ghat remembers it. In 1886 the young disciples of Sri Ramakrishna moved into a crumbling house here and began monastic life. Old temples, including a nine-spired Kali temple, stand by the river.
