Baranagar Math

বরানগর মঠ

The site of the first monastery of the Ramakrishna Order.

About Baranagar Math

After Sri Ramakrishna’s death in 1886 his young disciples, led by Narendranath, the future Swami Vivekananda, rented a dilapidated house at Baranagar that was said to be haunted. Here they took monastic vows and lived in great poverty until 1892. The old house collapsed long ago; the Ramakrishna Math has built a centre and memorial on the site.
