Tollywood
The home of the Bengali film industry, which is why Bengali cinema is called Tollywood. The studios are private workplaces, but the neighbourhood wears its film history openly: the metro station is named after Uttam Kumar, the industry’s greatest star. Old temples built by eighteenth and nineteenth-century landlords line Tollygunge Road.
Did you know
- Tollygunge is named after Major William Tolly, who dredged the Adi Ganga canal in the 1770s.
