A walk down Bidhan Sarani through market, theatre and sweet-shop country, ending among the clay gods of Kumartuli and the river.

- Start by 8 AM in summer, or mid-afternoon in winter to reach the river for sunset.
- Getting to the start
- Shyambazar metro (Blue Line) comes up at the crossing.
The route
- Shyambazar Five-Point Crossing Begin under Netaji’s statue, where five roads meet.
- Hatibagan Market Walk south through the pavement stalls of the north’s favourite market.
- Star Theatre The most famous stage of the old Bengali theatre, rebuilt after a fire.
- Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy Turn into the side lane for sandesh sold through a grille since 1844.
- Sovabazar Rajbari The rajbari whose Durga Puja began in 1757. View from the street unless it is Puja.
- Kumartuli Lanes of idol workshops. Ask before taking pictures.
- Kumartuli Ghat End on the steps of the potters’ ghat with the river in front of you.
